Injection molding machines consist of four main components: base, hopper, barrel, and clamping device. There are also smaller components, such as positioning components, nozzles, ejector pins, parting molds, clamping devices, and so on.

A hopper is a component that pours plastic material before the injection molding process begins. Hoppers usually contain a drying unit to protect the plastic material from moisture. It may also have small magnets to keep any harmful metal particles from entering the machine. Next, the plastic material is poured from the hopper into the following main components, called barrels. The barrel, or barrel and barrel, heats the plastic feedstock to a molten state and allows the plastic to flow through the barrel.

The advantage of the reciprocating screw design is that it helps control the temperature of the molten plastic.

The screw moves the plastic through the barrel. First, as pellets enter the barrel from the hopper, the screw rotates, pushing the material forward while adding more pellets. Second, the blades provide continuous mixing action that distributes heat evenly throughout the mass. This mixing also helps to clear the mechanics of the different materials and any color left over from earlier production runs on the same injection molding machine.

The reciprocating screw is responsible for providing most of the heat for the thermoformed plastic. This is because the diameter of the screw decreases as it approaches the tip. As a result, plastic particles are pulled by the blades, compressed into a tighter space, and cut by the turning blades. This action creates friction that evenly mixes the particles and heats them to the proper temperature.
