What is A Course in Miracles?

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching that is based on forgiveness. It was received through inner dictation by a Columbia University psychologist over a ten year period beginning in 1965 and first published in 1976 by the Foundation for Inner Peace. It has since been distributed widely without charge to men and women of every faith and background. It is a profound, intellectually sophisticated work of metaphysical, theological and psychological concepts that are woven together in a poetic language of blank verse.

It is a profound spiritual text that addresses the fundamental problems of mankind and envisions a solution. Its teachings are meant to heal the world by healing our perception of it. The goal of ACIM is to help us see that reality is not out there but within ourselves and that all our problems are caused by our false beliefs and perceptions about the world and life.

The course also teaches that our true purpose is to find and experience the Love of God. It is a course in finding our own inner connection to the Oneness of all life and that we cannot truly experience God unless we allow our mind to be free from the ego’s resistance to forgiveness. This is accomplished through a series of daily lessons and practice in the workbook that teach us to let go of all fear and open our hearts to God’s Love for all of creation.

A lot of people struggle to understand ACIM because it is not immediately accessible or comprehensible. Many even abandon the effort because they are not able to make any headway in understanding it. It takes a great deal of time and effort to work with the material of this course but over time it can simplify and clarify, much like a diamond emerges from carbon.

The Understanding ACIM Series class removes the mystery of this esoteric course by decoding its uniquely defined terminology and making the Course easier to read and understand. This is done by replacing pronouns and vague references with their antecedents. This makes the Course’s mystical language more easily readable and understood and removes some of the confusion that has been holding so many back from taking this amazing course and using it to change their lives.
What is the Workbook?

A workbook in Excel consists of individual worksheets that contain data or formulas organized in rows and columns. Each worksheet has a tab that identifies it; the active sheet is highlighted with a rectangular border, and you can move between sheets by clicking on the worksheet tabs or using the page up and down keys (Ctrl + PgUp and PgDn on Windows, or Fn+PgUp and PgDn on Mac).

The workbook also contains tools for managing data, including filters, sorting, renaming and deleting worksheets, and creating charts and graphs. It also has a set of built-in functions that calculate numerical information such as averages, counts and percentages.

In addition, the workbook offers a history stack that tracks all changes made to its content so that you can undo or redo them easily. You can also use the Find and Replace feature to find text or numbers across all worksheets in a workbook. The workbook also supports document themes, which allow you to specify colors, fonts and a variety of graphic effects for the entire document. It also supports protection, which prevents other users from adding, renaming or moving worksheets or modifying their contents. Learn more about this feature in the Protect a Workbook article.
What is the Text?

Despite its spiritually inspiring and psychologically sophisticated thought system, A Course in Miracles is not easily accessible or even comprehensible at first glance. Its poetic language, which includes a great deal of blank verse, has led some to compare it with works from the world’s great literature. Its use of religious terminology and its references to Christian doctrine also may confuse some students. And if you harbor animosity or resentment towards religion, words like Jesus and sin may trigger emotional responses that block your ability to open up to the deeper meaning of ACIM.

A Course in Miracles is not a book that will tell you how to live your life, but it does offer practical guidance on how to overcome the fears and self-limiting beliefs that keep you stuck in the status quo. It teaches that the only way to change is to replace the ideas in your mind with new ones that are more helpful and empowering. Tom’s focus has always been on teaching practical skills that can be immediately incorporated into your everyday life to reduce stress, fear and conflict in the world of individualized perception.

As a master teacher of ACIM, Tom is known for his ability to clarify the most difficult esoteric concepts. He is able to help students reframe their experiences and understand that the world they experience is an illusion of love. This understanding removes the underlying cause of all suffering and provides a foundation for true happiness.

Although A Course in Miracles is not a traditional religious text, its teachings are consistent with many religions including Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. But the greatest similarity between A Course in Miracles and other religious texts is its message of forgiveness. The Course teaches that the separation from God was an idea and that you can forgive yourself for creating it. This is the central theme of the entire teaching. This loving message is accompanied by a call to remember the truth, which is that God is everywhere and in everything and in everyone. That is why the Course calls the truth “a universal law.” The most important thing to remember is that you are not your body, your personality or your thoughts.
How can I Study A Course in Miracles?

Studying A Course in Miracles requires more than just reading the workbook and the Text. It involves changing your beliefs and perceptions about the world and its meaning. It is a profound spiritual and psychological curriculum designed to help you learn to let go of the ego's ideas about the world and replace them with new ones. This is a difficult task and why so many people struggle with ACIM.

When A Course in Miracles first appeared in 1976, it had a great impact on the people who read it. It became a modern spiritual classic, even acquiring scriptural status in the eyes of many readers. But it also had its share of critics. Many who tried to understand it gave up or struggled to do so for years. Others embraced it and devoted their lives to its teachings.

This is because, like other spiritual and psychological teachings of this kind, it challenges the ideas that most of us hold about ourselves, the world and its meaning. It teaches that the most meaningful things in life are not material. Rather, they are spiritual and emotional experiences of love, freedom, and forgiveness. It is a path toward true happiness.

Unlike most other spiritual texts, A Course in Miracles doesn't have any one method for studying it. Its manual for teachers states that the training is "highly individualized," and the Course itself suggests that you find a teacher who can help you best apply its lessons to your own situation.

For this reason, we have developed a series of ACIM classes for beginners called Understanding A Course in Miracles. These classes remove the mystery of the Course by explaining the meaning of its unique terminology and helping you uncover the blocks that are keeping you from incorporating ACIM into your daily life. In these multiple session class video replays, you will learn how to apply the principles of ACIM and begin to experience its transforming power.
