Removing the background of an image is an important part of photo editing that you should always be prepared to do. No matter how clean the background of your subject appears, you should always make sure you know how to remove it in case there are small imperfections, or if you’re planning on using it for another design project in the future that requires a completely transparent background. That said, there are two different ways to remove backgrounds in Photoshop - clipping paths and masks - each with their own set of benefits and drawbacks, which we’ll cover below.

What is a clipping path?

Clipping paths are a type of vector mask that is created using a pen and a closed shape. This closed shape can be anything from an ellipse, rectangle, or any other shape that you draw with your vector tool. The easiest way to create a clipping path is to draw your desired shape on top of the object you want to cut out, then use the pen tool subtract option by clicking and dragging along the edge of your object.

What is a mask?

A mask is a shape that you select and then add a layer of paint or transparency to. You can use a variety of shapes, including circles, squares, or polygons. The paint will show through the selected area but not the unselected area. This technique is often used in photo editing because it is one of the most effective ways to cut out an object from its background. Masks are also known as alpha channels.

Which method should I use?

There are two main methods for removing backgrounds from images. The first is the clipping path, which needs more time and effort but provides great results. The second is the mask, which is faster and easier but will not provide as precise of a result. If you are looking for a precise background or one that has a lot of detail, then the clipping path is your best choice. If you just want something quick and easy then use the mask instead!
