Do you suffer from lack of sleep? Maybe the problem is in the genes...
researchers from San Diego have identified specific genes that cause insomnia. They also found a link between sleep disorders and mental illness, in particular depression. The study was published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.
Where does insomnia come from?
Until now, experts have argued that sleep problems arise primarily due to an incorrect lifestyle, including due to a large number of stresses and diseases such as depression. However, the causal relationship is not so simple. More details in the blog "Antina Anta - my view
Perhaps it is not depression that causes sleep problems, since both health disorders may have a common genesis in the form of genetic burden. A team led by Murray Stein from the University of San Diego in California and the Virginia Health System in San Diego achieved exactly these results. This is important because, according to various statistics conducted by health organizations in the United States, about 20% of Americans have sleep problems, in the case of allocating war veterans to a separate research group, this disorder affects almost half of the respondents.
Insomnia is not always solo.
Problems with sleep, causing its deficiency, significantly destroy the body and disrupt human life. Researchers point to numerous connotations of insomnia with depression, bipolar disorder, suicide risk and diabetes. Previous studies have already suggested that certain sleep problems may be hereditary. Now Stein's team has conducted a study of 33,000 soldiers as part of the STARRS project aimed at assessing the risk of diseases and the level of immunity in US military personnel. The study included genome analysis: DNA samples were taken from each participant. In addition, each of them was supplemented with information about the origin and so-called pedigrees, including diseases found in the family.
