Text

A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual thought system that teaches forgiveness as the path to universal love and peace, or "remembering God." A three-volume curriculum, it consists of a Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. This Combined Edition of A Course in Miracles contains the three books plus two Supplements: Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice and The Song of Prayer.

The Text lays out the theoretical framework of A Course in Miracles. Its ideas provide the foundation for the lessons in the Workbook for Students, which are meant to change the student's perception of reality. The Manual for Teachers, written in question-and-answer form, clarifies a number of Course concepts and serves as a companion to the Text.

Originally published in 1976, this enduringly popular curriculum rose to popularity when Marianne Williamson shared her experience with it on The Oprah Winfrey Show, inspiring more than 2 million sales of the audio version. Jim Stewart narrates the first three volumes and Brad Cahill narrates the fourth volume.

This book contains the complete text of A Course in Miracles as authorized by its Scribe, Helen Schucman. It includes the thirty-two chapters of the Text arranged symphonically by theme, rather than line-by-line as in other texts that treat the entire Course.

This combines the complete Text of A Course in Miracles with the Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers, as well as two valuable Supplements: Psychotherapy: Purpose, Practice and The Song of Prayer. This unified edition is the only one that contains in a single volume all the writings that Helen Schucman, Scribe of A Course in Miracles, authorized to be printed, and it is published solely by The Foundation for Inner Peace, the not-for-profit organization she designated as its publisher, disseminator, and copyright holder.
Workbook for Students

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a self-study spiritual thought system that teaches the way to universal love and peace, or remembering God. It emphasizes healing relationships and making them holy. It uses the language of traditional Christianity but expresses a non-denominational spirituality.

The workbook contains 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. Each lesson is designed to lead you through the process of changing your mind, thereby altering your life. The ideas the lessons present may seem difficult to accept at first, but this is merely an indication of how profoundly new they are. In fact, they are based on the principle that knowledge comes through experience, not study or intellectual assent.

It is important to understand that the workbook does not provide answers to your questions. It teaches you to turn to your Internal Teacher for guidance, not to the outside world or the author of the book. The lessons are designed to help you find a place of quiet stillness within your own mind, where you will experience the reality of your own being.

The companion volume to Book 2, the Manual for Teachers, is written in question and answer form and provides answers to many of the more likely questions that students might have. It also clarifies a number of the terms that are used in the Course, explaining them within the theoretical framework of the Text.
Manual for Teachers

The Manual for Teachers is, as the name indicates, a companion to both the Text and the Workbook. It is designed to aid the teacher in his role as a guide along the path of the Course, and also to help him with questions about the concepts the Course presents.

The question-and-answer format of this section provides a clearer overview of the Course's teachings than can be given in the more theoretical approach of the Text. It also clarifies many of the terms used in the Course, defining them within the framework of the overall theory of forgiveness.

One of the most significant aspects of the Manual for Teachers is that it places heavy emphasis on the pupil's need to deal with egoic thoughts and ideas. It urges the teacher to assist his pupil in letting go of these thoughts, not in arguing against them or attacking them. In fact, the Course states that "the purpose of any attack is to affirm your belief in what it attacks" (Manual, p. 67; M-29.1:3).

Another major theme of the Manual is that learning in the Course takes place not primarily through study, but rather through application and extension. This is especially true for the workbook lessons, where the teacher helps his pupil apply what has been learned from the Text. The manual for teachers makes it clear that these applications will serve to reinforce the concepts taught in the Workbook and will help bring about the total thought reversal that the Course aims for.

The Manual for Teachers discusses many of the basic themes of the Course, including the nature of love and forgiveness. It is an important companion to the Text and the Workbook, but it is not a substitute for them. It is a vital guide for anyone who wants to put into practice the radical teachings of the Course and experience the greatest "miracle" of all -- gaining a full awareness of love's presence in one's life. The Course teaches that this is the natural inheritance of all children of God.
Supplements

Many spiritual teachings emphasize the healing of the body. A Course in Miracles broadens the concept of a miracle to include psychological and interpersonal healings that may occur in distinctly secular settings. It also teaches that while miracles may manifest on the bodily level, this is not their primary purpose. It is the shift from an ego-oriented view of reality to a more loving perspective that is truly transformative.

The Course explains that miracles are the result of the Holy Spirit's gift of true perception to the giver. This new perception allows the giver to see beyond a world pervaded by disease, inequality and separation to a spiritual reality of wholeness, equality and unity. The Holy Spirit orchestrates the interaction of the miracle worker and miracle receiver to match their unique mix of capabilities, thereby guaranteeing that the miracle will have a powerful impact.

In a typical miracle scenario, a person who has been trapped in a destructive pattern of behavior is asked by someone else to join him in stepping outside the old pattern. He agrees, setting aside any resentments that might stand in his way of extending the gift to another. As he does this, a miracle occurs. He extends his true perception of the receiver to her, and in so doing, he heals himself.

Although the Course uses Christian terminology, it is not a religion. It describes itself as a restatement of core wisdom that is shared by all major world religions, and it states that "a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary." It offers a way to transcend the seeming conflicts of the different religions by emphasizing forgiveness as the key to their common message. The workbook lessons offer a step-by-step approach to applying the Course's teachings in one's life. The supplements, which have been published since the original three-volume set was released in 1976, are written to assist in this process by offering a wide range of helpful questions and answers to help clarify the Course's teachings. They also provide additional practice exercises to supplement the daily lessons in the Workbook.
